Topic: Educational Outreach

Develop high quality educational materials (intro, medium and advanced in Creative Commons licenses) as well as schedule regular webinars for training.

As I {Suchith Anand} briefly mentioned, it is really important to have focus on Education esp. developing and making available good quality teaching and training materials on open geospatial standards (aimed at different levels - Introductory, Medium, Advanced etc) in Creative commons licences so that it is open and freely available to everyone and staff in universities worldwide can make use of them for teaching their students. Remember, students of today are the geospatial leaders of tomorrow.

Planning a webinar program series (1 hour maximum) aimed at education and outreach should also be considered. There should be course structure developed for the webinar program , so that it follows a structure and covers the course content .All webinars should be made available open to everyone (not just OGC members) for maximum outreach.

(David Arctur, 10 June 2014) I support this topic as stated above. Another education approach we are considering to develop at the Univ of Texas at Austin, is for continuing education / short courses (1 week, full-time) on applications of OGC web services and encodings, initially for students, water resource managers and engineers to build observation management systems based on OGC WaterML, WMS, WFS, SOS, and CSW. Focusing on a specific application domain like this should lead to practical implementations, and help in raising awareness and use of OGC standards at the university.

Relations to other topics

(David Arctur) As part of our short course development we will introduce use of GEOSS (http://earthobservations.org) as a resource for discovering and accessing data services.
