Integration into GEOSS. Proposal from Earth Challange and Valantis conclusions Scent

-- JoanMaso - 21 Feb 2019

This is a brief summary of the discussion about connecting Citizen Science, the GEOSS Platform and Earth Challenge 2020. This is highly relevant for this group because OGC standards are still one of the major ways to approach connectivity with GEOSS - at the same time, we might argue for additional needs when connecting Citizen Science, such as the possible support SensorThingsAPI... (just a thought).

The debate is still ongoing. Here the three most important conceptual items, which are closely related:

1) Do we see a need to streamline and support Citizen Science projects in getting connected to the GEOSS Platform? Does anyone see it feasible and has a good argument why each Citizen Science project might need to register in the yellow pages of GEOSS and connect for discoverability and harmonized data access individually? Else there might be a strong request to offer such middle man (hub) functionality in order to increase visibility and accessibility of Citizen Science data in GEOSS.

2) Assuming the latter, who might take such a role - or parts of it? Would you see it part of the GEOSS Initiative under preparation or of EC2020 to develop such connectors? Would you see a possible role of regional GEOSS hubs in this?

3) Following the overall ambition to connect CS data better to GEOSS, who would object to a two-phased approach, i.e. fist aiming to make CS data discoverable, and 'only' after that - piece by piece, or block by block - work on a harmonized data access?
