GMES Product Harmonization
The GMES Product Harmonization effort was launched by ESA in October 2007 as part of the [http://www.gmes.info Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES)] effort (a European Commission's Program) in order to define standard encodings for EO Data Products collected by various spaceborne instruments.
One possible standard which is currently under study to fullfill this requirement is the [http://vast.uah.edu/SensorML Sensor Modeling Language (SensorML)] developed through the consensus process of the
Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC)
A project is in progress since october to define SensorML profiles to satisfy such a need. These profiles are developed by [http://www.spotimage.com Spot Image] and this page is describing the approach followed by these profiles. There are three big categories of instruments taken in consideration and grouped in what are called sentinels (following GMES classification):
- Radar and SAR instruments (Sentinel 1) regrouping missions such as RadarSat-1, RadarSat-2, TerraSAR-X, Envisat (ASAR), ERS (SAR), Cosmo Skymed, Alos PALSAR, JERS
- Optical imagery instruments (Sentinel 2) regrouping missions such as SPOT-5, SPOT-4, IKONOS-2, Formosat-2, Kompsat-2, Cartosat-2, Alos AVNIR-2, ResourceSat-1, Rapid-Eye, UK-DMC
- Atmospheric instruments (Sentinel 3) regrouping missions such as Envisat (MERIS, AATSR, RA-2), Aqua/Terra (MODIS), Orbview-2 (SeaWiFS), OceanSat-2, OceanSat-3, ERS (ATSR, RA), NOAA (AVHRR), METOP, Jason-1, Jason-2, SPOT-5 (VGT)
